DOT Drug & Alcohol Testing

Consortium

Comprehensive DOT drug testing is an essential component of every transportation company’s DOT drug and alcohol compliance program. All drivers, or employers of drivers, with a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) are legally required to follow the specific drug testing protocols established by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

DOT drug testing regulations outline which drugs drivers must be tested for, when and how often testing should take place, which facilities are authorized to conduct DOT-approved drug tests, and the requirements for a trucking company’s Drug-Free Workplace program, among other important guidelines.

DOT-Required Drug Testing

Post - Accident

Depending on the nature of the accident and the severity of the injuries, drivers may be required to undergo immediate drug and alcohol testing to assess individual responsibility.

Random Drug Testing

To stay DOT compliant, both owner-operators and employees of transportation companies must join a consortium pool and participate in random drug testing throughout the year.

Pre Employment Drug Testing

Before operating a vehicle that requires a Commercial Driver’s License, all owner-operators or employees must undergo a pre-employment drug test and receive negative results.

Follow- Up's

Drivers who have successfully completed the return-to-duty process, including a negative return-to-duty test, are required to undergo multiple tests throughout the following year.

Reasonable Suspicion for Testing

If an employer suspects that an employee may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the workplace, the employee may be required to take a drug or alcohol test.

Return - To - Work

If a driver has previously tested positive for drugs or alcohol, they must first pass a negative "return-to-duty" drug test before resuming their work duties.

What Happens Next After the Test?

It does not matter if your drug test results are positive or negative, Truegene DNA & Drug Testing Solutions prioritizes client confidentiality, ensuring that results are always transmitted through secure channels to maintain discretion.

If a test comes back positive, our certified Medical Review Officer (MRO) will reach out to the employee to determine if any medical conditions, such as prescription medication use, could have influenced the results. If no valid medical explanation is found, the employee should be removed from safety-sensitive duties, and management should refer to the TDDTS Drug and Alcohol Policy program for guidance on the next steps.
